While its aim was to increase crop yield in the short term, it was carried out without considering the long-term consequences. The result has been an alarming increase in debt, cancer, and suicides. It has trapped our farmers in the vicious cycle of monoculture and made them dependent on costly and harmful fertilizers, genetically modified seeds, and pesticides which has, in turn, led to irreversible damage to the environment and our soil.
